Volume & Lift
for flat, fine, or oily hair
Undressed by Hairstory
What it is: A lightweight texturizing spray for people who don’t love the feeling of product in their hair
Why we love it: This texturizing spray is light as air, and never feels crunchy, starchy, or chunky. It’s perfect for people with fine hair. Use generously at the roots to create extra volume and give your style a natural, lived-in texture.
Texture Mist by Afterworld Organics
What it is: a texturizing spray that adds a bit of extra grit
Why we love it: This texturizing spray is perfect for people who want more voluminous hair. A bit stronger than Undressed, it’s still a pretty lightweight option that works best for fine hair when sprayed at the roots. We like using this mist on bangs that are starting to look fine or oily.
Mare by Reverie
What it is: our strongest, volume-building salt spray
Why we love it: This product is incredible for beefing up your hair’s volume. We use it to create the kind of vintage-inspired height we love in the crown area of a shag or French bob. It creates a gritty texture reminiscent of post-ocean-swim hair. Ideal for oily and flat hair in need of some serious body-building. A little goes a long way.
Powder by Hairstory
What it is: our favorite dry shampoo
Why we love it: Powder works on both light and dark hair, unlike most powdered dry shampoos. This stuff absorbs oils and leaves your hair voluminous and starchy. It’s the best on bangs, and our go-to solution on dirty hair days.
Jelly by Cult and King
What it is: a texturizing, sea salt “jelly”
Why we love it: This unique salt jelly adds a ton of starchy texture and creates serious volume. It’s our favorite product for fine, curly hair because it creates those big shapes we love. Try this on damp hair and then dry with a diffuser: It’s like magic.
definition
FOR FLUFFY, PUFFY, OR FRIZZY HAIR
Hair Balm by Hairstory
What it is: a satin-finish defining cream
Why we love it: This is our number one go-to product for short and textured hair. It works wonderfully to create definition in curls and waves, and we like to use it to define the ends of shags, bangs, or bobs as well. Plus, it never gets greasy or crunchy.
Grooming Lotion by Afterworld Organics
What it is: a lighter version of Hair Balm
Why we love it: This hair cream offers slightly less defining hold than Hairstory’s Hair Balm, but it’s silkier and more moisturizing. It adds lovely definition and a lot of shine. We recommend this one for extremely dry hair.
Milk by Reverie
What it is: a super-lightweight smoothing cream
Why we love it: Milk is the lightest of our hair creams– so light it almost feels like liquid powder. Perfect for either fine or coarse hair, this stuff is weightless and very effective for smoothing frizz and flyaways.
Rake by Reverie
What it is: a super-strong hair paste
Why we love it: This one’s for people who want serious definition. Rake creates a messy, rock-n-roll texture that makes a statement. Great for people trying to achieve noticeable, sexy, long-lasting bedhead.
Moisture Lock by Afterworld Organics
What it is: a moisturizing serum for dry hair
Why we love it: This serum not only adds moisture, it locks moisture into your hair with a weightless finish. Ideal for curls and waves as well as dry and thirsty hair.
Cleansing
FOR all hair types
New Wash by Hair Story
What is is: a toxic-free, no-foam cream cleanser
Why we love it: Our number one choice for cleansing all hair types is Hairstory’s New Wash. It’s a new kind of shampoo that does not foam or create suds like most shampoos. (It’s better!) Foaming makes your hair look fluffy and big right after washing, but it also strips your hair of natural oils. New wash doesn’t do that: It gets your head clean, but your hair doesn’t lose that natural moisture. Our favorite formulas are the original (which works for pretty much every hair texture) and the rich formula (which is ideal for highly processed, colored hair and extremely dry, coarse hair).
Note:
Hairstory recommends their “deep” formula for fine hair, but we prefer using the original formula (and a little powder at the roots as needed). This combo creates piecy, separated texture without weight, leaving fine hair with both volume AND natural oils.
For more coarse and damaged hair, we like using the “rich” formula.
For everyone else, we recommend the original formula.
Make sure to buy the scalp massage brush, especially if it’s your first time using New Wash. It will stimulate your scalp and help get the product into your roots. And it feels amazing!
